THE BIG JAWS REVIEW 2021

This Daily Jaws review of 2021, swallow you whole.

As Jaws events go, we're gonna need a bigger calendar, as it has been a truly great (white) 12 months to be a Jaws fan.

Love to prove that, wouldn't we. Get our name into the National Geographic. Well we've gone back through the last year and cut it wide open.

So, hold your breath as we take a deep dive through a treasure trove of Jaws events that show that the shark and cast of Jaws are still global (they've always been Universal) stars almost 50 years since it was first released.

This year we've seen everything from being an official media partner for The Shark Is Broken as it has wowed the West End in London (fingers crossed for a tour, boys) and had an exclusive interview about the unveiling of Bruce in LA at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with Greg Nicotero.

If that wasn't enough, we also had an exclusive interview with Valerie Taylor and the director about Jaws and the must-see documentary, Playing With Sharks, and we lined ourselves up to have a hot lunch with Deputy Hendricks himself, Jeffrey Kramer, in the middle of London.

And, in a year we we didn't think we could have any bigger bite radius, we even ended up following in the footsteps of Jaws author Peter Benchley, by featuring on Shark Week to talk about the Jaws WeMake.

In an uncertain world, thank you to everyone for their time, support, articles and just reading, liking and sharing our content. The Daily Jaws is only where it is because of you, so thanks for continuing to be a part of that journey.

We drink to your legs, and here's to a bigger and better boat in 2022.

MOST WATCHED VIDEO OF 2021

Surprisingly, our most watched video of 2021 is about Jaws 2 (1978) and not Jaws (1975). With over 91,000 views, ‘Jaws 2: Deleted Scenes’ shows footage from an original TV broadcast of Jaws 2 on TBS.

IMAGE OF THE YEAR: SCARRED GREAT WHITE SHARK

The huge sea creature was spotted near to the Neptune Islands in South Australia, which is an area known to be populated by around 1,000 great white sharks.

By the looks of things, this large male has been scrapping with each and every one of them.

Whilst those who filmed the footage thought the giant predator may have been injured by boat propellers or tuna nets, they've since done away with that idea.

Underwater cinematographer Dean Spraakman said the shark was 'friendly' and 'calm', but the marks on it suggest otherwise.

However, whilst we might not know in this exact case, National Geographic explorer Professor Yannis Papastamatiou reckons some of the marks were caused by fighting with other sharks.

He told the Sun: "Females are often heavily scarred from mating behaviour but males can get bitten as well during dominance interactions between sharks e.g. a larger shark may want a smaller shark and dominate the smaller individual with a non-fatal warning bite.

STORY OF THE YEAR:

2021 was a HUGE year for Jaws and proved impossible to choose just one story of the year. So here are four!

THE SHARK IS BROKEN

The Daily Jaws was truly honoured to be named exclusive media partner of The Shark Is Broken, the hit West End play about the making of Jaws co-written by and starring Ian Shaw, son of Robert Shaw (Quint).

RESTORED BRUCE THE SHARK UNVEILED AT ACADEMY MUSEUM OF MOTION PICTURES

Back in march 2018, The Daily Jaws reported ‘Junkyard Jaws’, the last known remaining original mould of Bruce the shark used in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975), was to be restored by Greg Nicotero (executive producer, special effects make-up effects supervisor and director on The Walking Dead), and exhibited at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. That reality took a giant thrash of the tail forward as a fully restored Bruce was installed - and he looks stunning.

In an exclusive interview for The Daily Jaws, SFX maestro Greg Nicotero talked about the restoration and the legacy of Jaws during the Museum’s opening night.

THE DAILY JAWS APPEARS ON SHARK WEEK

Following in the footsteps of Jaws author Peter Benchley, The Daily Jaws (TDJ) made its triumphant debut on Discovery's Shark Week earlier this week.

They were featured on Josh Gates Tonight talking about the global sensation that was the Jaws WeMake, a fan-made retelling of Jaws produced under lockdown conditions in backyahd's from the UK, US and even India.

Gates dubbed Ross and Dean from TDJ as "visionaries" for their fun and fin-filled rendition of the classic 1975 Steven Spielberg film, which Josh called "a stunning achievement."

THE DAILY JAWS MEETS JEFFREY KRAMER

Ross, creator of The Daily Jaws, said: "It was an honour to hold court with Jaws royalty. He's so knowledgeable, not just about the films he has been in as an actor, but also about his careers in development at Fox and as an Emmy Award winning Producer. He is a real inspiration.”

IN MEMORIAM

MELVIN VAN PEEBLES (1932 - 2021)

Filmmaker and author Melvin Van Peebles has died at the age of 89. The rebel director known for his groundbreaking "blaxploitation" films, passed on Sept. 21 surrounded by his family, the Criterion Collection announced.

"Dad knew that Black images matter," his son Mario Van Peebles said in a statement released by Criterion. "If a picture is worth a thousand words, what was a movie worth? We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free. True liberation did not mean imitating the colonizer’s mentality. It meant appreciating the power, beauty and interconnectivity of all people."

Melvin was known for directing productions such as the 1971 indie classic "Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song," "The Story of a Three-Day Pass," "Watermelon Man" and "Don’t Play Us Cheap."
