Fans hopeful "underwhelming" JAWS 50th anniversary announcement is just first wave

Martha's Vineyard, the iconic filming location for Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster JAWS, has announced its plans for the movie’s 50th anniversary in 2025. However, what should have been a massive cause for excitement for one of the most influential films in cinema history has instead left many fans disappointed. The island's plans have been described as "underwhelming," sparking discussions among movie buffs, locals, and tourists alike.

A Cultural and Cinematic Milestone

JAWS was a cultural phenomenon that redefined the modern blockbuster and etched itself into the annals of film history. Shot on location on Martha's Vineyard, the island doubled as the fictional town of Amity, forever linking its quaint coastal charm to the terror of a rogue great white shark. The movie's release not only bolstered Spielberg’s career but also turned the Vineyard into a pilgrimage site for fans, with its beaches, harbors, and towns serving as living relics of the film.

The Expectations

Fans of the film were expecting something extraordinary to mark the 50th anniversary—perhaps a large-scale film festival, reenactments of iconic scenes, or even an appearance by Spielberg himself. Many envisioned a multimedia event combining screenings, panels, and interactive exhibits that would celebrate the movie’s legacy and its lasting impact on both cinema and pop culture.

Past anniversaries and JAWS-themed events have drawn thousands of visitors. Merchants, hoteliers, and restaurateurs saw the milestone as an opportunity to capitalize on the film's enduring popularity.

While some have described the announcement as underwhelming, taking into account the recent challenges faced by the MV Chamber, this is a solid first step and hope the Chamber (and Universal) have more up their sleeve to give JAWS the 50th anniversary it deserves.

The Reality: Modest Plans

The announced events include a JAWS exhibiton at the MV Museum, a meet and greet with Martha’s Vineyard local Jeffrey Voorhees aka Alex Kintner, a baseball game between the Amity Sharks (MV Sharks) vs Quints Navigators (North Shore) and Amity Week in which the Edgartown Board of Trade will celebrate with a series of unconfirmed events. While these activities are sure to please die-hard fans, they fall short of the grand spectacle many had hoped for.

What’s Missing?

Critics have pointed out several missed opportunities. For instance, a partnership with Universal Pictures, which could have lent resources for a grander celebration, appears absent for now. A digital or virtual component for fans unable to visit the island was also notably missing from the announcement.

Moreover, there’s been no word on appearances by key members of the cast or crew. Surviving stars, such as Richard Dreyfuss, who played marine biologist Matt Hooper, have attended JAWS conventions in the past, and their involvement could have been a significant draw.

Looking Ahead

Despite the subdued plans, Martha's Vineyard still expects a surge in tourism as fans flock to the island to mark the milestone. Local businesses are expected to be preparing JAWS-themed merchandise, menus, and activities to cater to the influx of visitors.

With 2025 just around the corner, there’s still time for organizers to expand the scope of the celebrations. Until then, fans of JAWS may have to settle for a more subdued tribute to the shark that changed cinema forever.
