Limited Edition Jaws Watch Worn By Hooper Re-Released

This Jaws sequel is about time

Quite literally, as the watch that Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss, wore in Jaws has been reissued after receiving an update.

And linking in with all things Jaws, there are only 1,975 of the watches for sale, a nice nod to the year of release of the Steven Spielberg directed film.

The Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic still has the same iconic look - save for a different strap (although rumour has it that the original Hopper design bracelet is being released soon) and beneath its face it has been brought up to date using modern materials and technology.

Like the original, it is built to last as is shock-resistant to ISO 1413 standard which should be sufficient for knocks endured on the snow, the ice or the waves...or even being lightly thrashed about in a shark cage, probably.

And budding Matt Hoopers will be pleased to know that it is even made to be used as a dive watch and therefore has a unidirectional bezel which removes the risk of it being accidentally turned while underwater, which could result in a fatal miscalculation of dive time.

The Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic, as worn by Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws while on the look out for sharks on 4th July weekend.

Not that it wouldn't look just as nice on a dressier occasion, whether it's an art show in Amity or at a ball in Brisbane. Not that you need to go to Brisbane.

So what of the updates, this is an ever so slightly different beast of a watch to the original.

On its website the company said: We wanted our watches to follow their predecessors by having lovely domed crystals therefore we design and manufacture our glass specially in order that they are true to their heritage in design terms. We decided to go with sapphire crystal in the Nautoscaph Superautomatic as it is tougher wearing day to day than mineral crystal. Also, we agonized long and hard over whether or not to have a magnifying window or “cyclops” above the date. Our dilemma was this; like many dive watch enthusiasts, we prefer no magnifying window on our divers however Matt Hooper did have a magnifier on his watch!

Which way do we go? Do we opt for robustness and reducing the risk of damage to the crystal or do we stay true to Hooper? We went for toughness and opted for no magnifier.

This watch is certainly a class act, it's not just something you can pick up in Amity Hardware. It's RRP is £795/$1,035/€950.

Were they right to deviate from the original watch? What do you think? Let us know in the comments. Find out more about the watch here: Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic
