JAWS 3: Rare full length trailer discovered on 40th anniversary of shark sequel
JAWS 3-D, the second sequel to Steven Spielberg’s seminal blockbuster JAWS (1975), sees a giant thirty-five-foot shark becomes trapped in a SeaWorld theme park and it's up to the sons of police chief Brody to rescue everyone. Directed by JAWS and JAWS 2 Production Designer Joe Alves, ‘JAWS III’ as it was initially titled, became the first JAWS movie to use 3-D technology hence the title change to JAWS 3-D. As with the previous installments, the marketing of JAWS III/3-D would be an event in itself and The Daily Jaws has uncovered a full feature length trailer for JAWS III.
The JAWS 3-D teaser trailer (below), voiced by the unmistakable Percy Rodriguez gives us that now iconic water-level perspective developed by Spielberg and crew for the original JAWS. With the screen spily into three I segments (forming a ‘III’) we see a large doral fin breaking the surface, charging toward the camera, with John Wiliams’ classic JAWS score becoming ever more climactic. At just over a minute long, The main sell here is that for first time JAWS will be a 3-D experience like no other. And they weren’t wrong.
However, The Daily Jaws have recently learned that a full-length trailer exists. This shows much more of what is to be expected from the film and it even includes a split-second clip from JAWS. The first thing you will notice is that Percy Rodriguez '(the voice of JAWS) is not narrating this promo. Starting with some underwater shots from the begining of opening credits of JAWS 3-D, the trailer quickly pivots to linking back to JAWS, using a clip of Bruce the shark as he crashes onto the Orca followed by Lea Thompson in her movie debut running into the water (a la Susan Backlinie as Chrissie at the start of JAWS).
We are taken through a series of clips from some of the action highlights and set pieces, as well as establishing shots of the stars of the movie, namely Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. Everything you’d expect from a movie trailer. However, there is one glaring ommission… no mention of 3-D. At any point.
Even the title itself is just ‘JAWS 3’. No ‘D’? The title desgn itself is of a 3-D perspective. JAWS and JAWS 2 titles were in 2-D so this must be deliberate, right? So why leave out the fact that this was a 3-D title? It’s a massive selling point so why not mention it? The answer is unclear but we will keep digging for an answer. We have uploaded the full-length trailer to our YouTube channel (subscribe here) for your enjoyment. Let us know what you think in the coments!
