RARE JAWS POSTER UP FOR AUCTION AT SOTHEBY'S

A giant Jaws poster from its UK release In 1975 is set to go under the hammer at the world famous auctioneers, Sotheby's.

It's a rare bus stop poster, measuring an impressive 60 x 40 in. (152.4 x 101.6 cm), so if you fancy purchasing it, you're gonna need a bigger wall.

And if you've never seen a Jaws poster that size, there's a good reason, it's because they don't surface very often, with Sotheby's in their listing calling it 'exceptionally rare.'

It is estimated to sell for between £2,000-3,000, with opening bids starting at £1,200. The iconic Roger Kastel designed poster is commanding such a price due to its fantastic condition, the auction house describe it as in 'excellent condition, with the colours remaining very bright.'

Crucially it is unfolded, which is hugely rare for a poster of this age, plus it is linen backed.

A linen backed poster is a poster that is archivally mounted to acid free paper and canvas, and is the preferred archival method for conserving and/or restoring a poster. Linen backing can improve the appearance of a poster and substantially increase its value.

Dean Newman, Head of Content for The Daily Jaws and an avid film poster collector, said: "I was lucky enough to get my city hands on a linen backed Jaws UK quad poster from its original release, which I've bought as a future investment, as well as a huge fan of the film.

"As it's printed on paper that is nearly 50 years old, it was very important for me to buy it and easily retain its condition and value, and linen backing gave me that confidence in buying such a classic piece of film art."

Here's Dean's tips for buying film posters at auction.

●Check out the listing and contact the auction house for further details if you need to, it's a big investment so you want to be sure you will be happy with what you are bidding on.

●Do your research and find out how much similar grade posters of the same title have been sold for in the past at auction, by poster stores or even on ebay.

●Set yourself a limit and stick to it, don't get caught up in a bidding frenzy if you can't afford to - and think about the extra costs below.

●Remember to factor in the buyer's premium rate (which could add an extra 20-25% to the hammer price).

●Also ask about courier charges for the item you are thinking of buying ahead of auction. Many auction houses will deal with a particular company/companies and will only store items for a set period of time.

●And if you miss out... There will always be another poster auction, even bidding and not winning is a good experience.
