The Daily Jaws Guide to Shark Week 2020

If it's summer, then it is almost time for Discovery Channel in the US to start chumming the water in readiness for Shark Week 2020, which begins on August. It runs for, um, eight days. 

But has the annual shark event lost its bite? Many have complained the week is now less about education and more about entertainment and sensationalism. With 20 hours of shark action, there must be something, right? 

The Daily Jaws dives into the proposed programmes to help you decide if it is Shark Week or more Shark Weak.

Sunday, Aug. 9

8 p.m. -- Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach 

Researchers return to one of the last hunting grounds for “Air Jaws"  to count the number of breaches and collect data on hunting techniques to see if the shark population is bouncing back. 

9 p.m. -- Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef

Not sure of his bite radius but boxing legend Mike Tyson is going - hyperthetically - head to head with some of the ocean’s top apex predators including the black tip reef shark in “Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef.”

Monday, Aug. 10

8 p.m. -- Abandoned Waters

Thanks to Covid-19, there has been little human interaction for the first time in decades, now some of the biggest great white sharks on earth are returning to their natural behavior -- allowing scientists to study them up close  in ways that were nearly impossible before.

9 p.m. -- ShaqAttack

Shaquille O’Neal sets out to discover what shark has the perfect predatory attack, along with the help of YouTube stars Dude Perfect and Mark Rober. They put various species to the test, uncovering their amazing hunting techniques. 

10 p.m. -- Jaws Awakens

Join the search for Fred, at nearly 20 feet long and two-tons, he is the largest male great white shark in the world.

Tuesday, Aug. 11

8 p.m. -- Extinct or Alive: Land of the Lost Sharks

Dice into some of the most treacherous, shark-infested waters in the southern hemisphere to rediscover three unique sharks lost to science for almost a century. 

9 p.m. -- Will Smith: Off The Deep End

Will Smith features in his very own "Shark Tale" as he confronts his fear of the open seas and the open jaws of sharks. 

10 p.m. -- Great White Serial Killer Extinction

The Great White Serial Killer returns, its intended victim? The California Sea Otter, which it could eat to extinction.

Wednesday, Aug. 12

8 p.m. -- Monster Under the Bridge

What lies beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge? Fishermen claim there is an 18-foot-long, one-ton great hammerhead named Big Moe. 

9 p.m. -- Adam Devine’s Secret Shark Lair

Last year, Adam Devine and his team discovered a secret tiger shark lair. But what makes this shark gathering so special? 

10 p.m. -- Great White Double Trouble

In Australia there is a rising tide of shark attacks, with great whites leading the way. And scientists have just discovered that Australian waters are home to not one population of great whites...but two. 

Thursday, Aug. 13

8 p.m. -- Air Jaws 2020

Celebrating 20 years of flying sharks and possibly Shark Week's most enduring moment. 

9 p.m. -- Jaws in America

Snoop Dogg - yes, that's right - takes a look at why Great White Sharks are back in increased numbers along US shores. 

10 p.m. -- Mako Nation

Uncovering the mysteries of the mako shark in one of the last places on earth where these apex predators rule the waters.

Friday, Aug. 14

8 p.m. -- Alien Sharks: First Contact

Deep in the ocean make first contact with the elusive frilled shark, sleeper shark and cookie cutter shark. 

9 p.m. -- Lair of the Great White

Can a team of experts discover why a population of great whites off the coast of Western Australia is so much more aggressive than others? 

10 p.m. -- Tiger Shark King

In the Caribbean, a deepsea camera captured footage of a 14-foot tiger shark suffering an assault by a large, unseen beast. Could it be an unknown species of mega-shark or even a cannibalistic tiger shark?

11 p.m. -- I Was Prey: Terrors from the Deep

True life stories from people who came face-to-face with the ocean’s top predator and lived to tell their stories.

Sunday, Aug. 16

8 p.m. -- Naked & Afraid of Sharks 2

On the edge of the Bermuda Triangle, five Naked and Afraid veterans attempt to survive on a remote strip of islands whose waters are so teeming with predators, locals call it “Shark Alley.” With limited resources and punishing conditions on land, they’ll have no choice but to take to the waters and compete with hungry sharks for the same food.
