'JAWS shark' makes record 2,000-mile journey from US to Mexico
A female white shark measuring 14 feet, dubbed "LeeBeth" by biologists, has embarked on an extraordinary journey spanning over 2,000 miles since December 8. Originating from the waters near Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, she has made her way to Matamoros, Mexico, near the Texas border on the Gulf Coast.
This migration marks the furthest track into the Gulf of Mexico ever recorded for a white shark, offering valuable insights into their habitat range. LeeBeth's travels suggest the Gulf may host more white sharks than previously believed, shedding light on their behavior and distribution.
Equipped with a tracking tag, LeeBeth's frequent breaches aid researchers in monitoring her movements, providing valuable data. Captured by overhead satellites, these pings detail her remarkable journey along the East Coast, around Florida's southern tip, and along the Gulf's western coast, with notable checkpoints near Padre Island and Matamoros. Led by Capt. Chip Michalove, her tagging has contributed significantly to understanding these majestic creatures' migratory patterns.
With our ability to track sharks becoming more innovative and accurate, it’s only a matter of time before the plot of JAWS The Revenge becomes more plausible…… ;0)
