Jaws and Jurassic Park slug it out at US box office

Yes, you read that right, two Steven Spielberg box office titans have been fighting for cinematic top spot supremacy at the US box office.

One, 25 feet long and weighing three tons and the other 65 million years in the making, both teeth razor sharp. And both undisputed kings of the box office during their years of release. In 1975 and 1993.

This is cinema 2020-style, thanks to Covid-19. Jurassic Park earned just over $517,000 over the weekend of 19-21 June, playing on 230 screens, just edging out the original summer blockbuster, Jaws, which swam into second spot with $516,000 from 187 venues.

Both were mostly seen at drive-ins to help ensure social distancing, with US cinemas expected to begin opening again in July.

But for now it's a case of when dinosaurs ruled the box office, and with a great white shark film that is 45 years old snapping at its heels, life, uh, finds a way to transport Jaws and Jurassic Park to the box of the box office...once again.
