Hollywood legend returns home as school honors “JAWS” Composer

LOS ANGELES — One of cinema’s most iconic composers has been celebrated in a place where his journey first began.

John Williams, the legendary mind behind the unforgettable score of Jaws and dozens of other classic films, has been honoured with a brand-new performing arts centre named after him at his former school, North Hollywood High School.

The newly opened John Williams Performing Arts Center was unveiled during a special ceremony this week, marking a major milestone for the campus. Williams himself attended the event, helping cut the ribbon and welcoming students into the state-of-the-art space.

Clearly moved by the occasion, the composer reflected on his time as a student, describing those early years as deeply influential in shaping his future career.

The celebration featured performances from the school’s marching band and orchestra, who paid tribute by playing some of Williams’ most famous film scores — including music from Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The new centre is part of a wider $320 million redevelopment project at the school, blending historic architecture with modern facilities designed to expand opportunities for students in the arts and beyond.

School officials say the venue is more than just a building — it’s a symbol of what students can achieve. Williams, who once walked the same halls, now serves as a powerful example of where creativity and dedication can lead.

For students in the audience, the moment was inspiring. Seeing a figure whose music has defined generations return to his roots offered a simple but powerful message: greatness can start anywhere — even in a high school classroom.
