Giant shark fins glide up London’s River Thames in The Meg 2 publicity stunt
To paraphrase JAWS, when it comes to The Meg 2: The Trench you’re not gonna need a bigger PR stunt.
To promote the film’s UK opening on Friday 4 August, Warner Bros Pictures arranged for three impressive giant handmade Megalodon dorsal fins to slice their way through the Capital, down the River Thames.
Not that real sharks in the Thames are unheard of, which is great news for us and marine life as it means the water quality of the once ‘dead river’ is improving to be able to sustain such life. Not that it could sustain a ‘Meg’, which died out 2.6 million years ago, or did it?
The Meg 2: The Trench stunt was some-fin that got the heads of onlookers turning as the huge fins headed towards Tower Bridge – to help give those fins some scale - raising awareness of the Jason Statham shark sequel to The Meg.
And it was a fitting promotion, with some of the killer shark sequel being filmed just outside London at Leavesden, which is also home to the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
This time round the film is directed by British director Ben Wheatley – himself a huge fan of JAWS - and stars the returning Jason Statham, with Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mancheta, Skyler Samuels, Sienna Guillory and Cliff Curtis all along for the sharktacular cinematic ride.
The hope is that this sequel will be biting at the box office heels of its predecessor, which swallowed over an impressive $530 million back in 2018, making it – once adjusted for inflation – the highest grossing shark film of all time outside of JAWS (1975) and its sequel JAWS 2 (1978).
