COMING SOON: NEW SHARK-MOVIE DOCUMENTARY 'SHARKSPLOITATION'

A new documentary about the shark movie sub-genre is set for release soon.

Since the release of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975), cinema saw an explosion in shark themed movies, many were cash grabs quickly disappearing beneath the theatrical waves, with others leaving their mark but never achieving the same success.

New documentary ‘Sharksploitation’ will examine the seemingly ceaseless audience appetite for shark infested cinema and the various ways filmmakers have reinvented the giant fish story. The documentary also explores the shark movie pre-Jaws and the effect the sub-genre has had on the perception of sharks. This sub-genre, swallow you whole!

INTERVIEW: Misty Talley Director of 'Santa Jaws'

The movie Jaws had a massive impact on me becoming a filmmaker, and it began my lifelong fascination with sharks. This documentary is the ultimate love letter to the shark movie genre, filmmakers who work hard to make these films, and to the misunderstood species themselves.
— Stephen Scarlata, Director 'Sharksploitation'

While which shark films will be covered is yet to be confirmed, we hope to see the likes of The Reef, The Shallows, The Meg and The Last Shark as well as the Jaws sequels. Sharksploitation will feature interviews with Jaws screenwriter Carl Gottlieb as well as Wendy Benchley, shark conservationist and wife of late Jaws novelist Peter Benchley.

Ultimately, they hope that audiences will come away not only entertained but with a better understanding of sharks.

Jaws and effect: New research suggests that shark films could be held responsible for a negative impact on the species. We speak to one of the people behind the report. Video below.
