News Of First Ever UK Shark Thriller Surfaces
Shark attacks globally may be at a low for a second year, but the cinematic waters are positively churning with shark action, and a UK production is set to enter the chummed waters.
Something In The Water, which is being produced by Noel Clarke and Jason Maza's production company, will follow five female friends celebrating a wedding in a beautiful, remote location.
The day before the wedding, they embark on a boat trip to create some lasting memories, but it ends up being memorable for all the wrong reasons. Clearly, Mama Mia, this ain't. Perhaps an alternative title could have been Four Funerals and a Wedding?
The film is yet to be cast, with shooting expected to take place later this year, but the plan is that four of the women will be British, with one an American.
That's pretty much all the story details we currently have, but so far it sounds like it could be a mix of The Shallows meets The Reef, which we said were two of the best shark movies of the last decade: Best Shark Movies Of The Decade 2010-2019
So this could have all the ingredients to be a belter.
It's set to be helmed by Gaby Dellal, who also directed 3 Generations, and the script is by Scottish novelist Cat Clarke, based on her own original idea.
Five women, a quintet if you will, on a boat being circled by a shark or sharks, the 'female Jaws' comparisons are sure to come thick and fast.
Several shark thrillers of late have featured a strong female cast lately, including 47 Meters Down, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Blood In The Water all featured strong female characters.
Of course, that Jaws comparison is inevitable with any shark film. And there are certainly a few of those being announced or released in the year that Jaws celebrates its 45th anniversary. We already have Alphas.
And 2021 can expect Great White, from the team that brought us The Reef, and Meg 2 in the summer.
