The Shark Is Broken: JAWS drop for Broadway opening night
It was a case (of apricot brandy), we mean of break a (bow legged) leg for the Broadway opening night of the Olivier-nominated play The Shark is Broken, the comedy about the behind-the-scenes hijinks of the making of JAWS (1975).
The cast of Ian Shaw, Alex Brightman and Colin Donnell, doing their uncanny looks, sounds and mannerisms of Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider brought the house down at the Golden Theater, showing the audience the way to go home as the cast stood in front of the replica Orca to take their-well earned bows to the appreciative crowd.
Deadline have said that it is “so vivid you can almost smell the sea air”, with the Associated Press calling it “a lyrical, moving comedy-drama. The tension, humor, depth, silliness and horror come like waves.”
We were lucky enough to get our city hands on some exclusive footage of that opening night, from the (blood) red carpet to the farewell and adieu from the talented cast.
After fishing in the waters of the Edinburgh Fringe, London’s West End, Toronto in Canada and now feeding on New York’s Broadway, it is hoped the cast and crew are gonna get a bigger encore.
Step aboard the Orca and film history in the making for The Shark Is Broken. The play, swallow you whole, and we at The Daily Jaws called it the biggest thing to happen to JAWS since the release of the Steven Spielberg film, back in 1975.
To paraphrase Amity Island’s Mayor Vaughn, this is going to be the best summer you’ve ever had!
