Steven Spielberg and John Williams' 50-year partnership to be celebrated
If Steven Spielberg and John Williams thought they were gonna need a bigger celebration to recognise their five-decade long partnership then they'll get it come January thanks to American Cinematheque tribute. The news was exclusively revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.
The pair, who first worked together on The Sugarland Express (1974), began working on that film in 1972, and the rest has not only been film history but an integral part of our lives and popular culture.
The bearded duo have been a dream director and composer team on everything from JAWS to E.T. - the extra-terrestrial, Indiana Jones to Jurassic Park and Schindler's List to their latest, The Fabelmans. It is expected that Williams final flourish of his baton will be for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which is released in June 2023 and sees Harrison Ford back as Indiana Jones. Spielberg has handed over the directing reigns to James Mangold but is still in Executive Producer duties.
Back to that evening of all things Spielberg and Williams, their celebration evening “Spielberg/Williams — 50 Years of Music and Movies,” will feature a mix of clips and conversation about their work and friendship.
No doubt the story of how Spielberg first thought Williams was joking when he played what he thought would make a good JAWS theme will feature as part of the conversation. And who wouldn't be hanging on their every word and anecdote?
The event takes place on Thursday January 12th at 6 pm, at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
Dean Newman, Head of Content at The Daily Jaws, the world's number one JAWS fan site, said: "Like for many people, the combined work of Spielberg and Williams is just part of our DNA, whether that be making JAWS theme noises in the pool, watching their work on the big or small screen, or being taken on a roller coaster ride of the emotions through their creative collaboration over the last 50 years.
”Together they've delivered some of the most recognisable and beloved moving images and sounds that has transcended cinema and just is an intrinsic part of us and our very lives. It would be a far duller place without that towering body of work through 29 collaborations, which is a stunning achievement."
