SONY begins pre-production of new shark movie in Austraila
Australia, known for its sweeping plains and myriad of dangerous land and water creatures, will soon be the backdrop for a new, yet-to-be-titled shark film from Sony Pictures.
Deadline first broke the news, later confirmed by Variety, that production for the thriller will begin this summer. The film will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, known for "Dead Snow" and "Violent Night," who also wrote the script.
The project is being produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick through Hyperobject Industries, the company behind "The Menu," "Succession," "Don’t Look Up," and "Winning Time."
Described by The Insneider as a shark attack horror movie, specific details about the plot are still under wraps. SONY last tackled the shark movie in 2016 with the excellent “The Shallows”.
In related news, Variety recently reported that Phoebe Dynevor and Bella Ramsey will star in "More Flames," a film from McKay's Yellow Dot Studios and Climate Spring. This short film, part of the #FlipTheScript campaign, aims to change the narrative around the climate crisis.
Dynevor gained global fame for her role as Daphne Bridgerton in Netflix's "Bridgerton." A BAFTA nominee, her other credits include the 2023 thriller "Fair Play," and TV series "Dickensian" and "Younger." Her upcoming projects include Jan Komasa’s thriller "Anniversary" and Neil Burger’s spy film "Inheritance."
Shark attack movies appear to be becoming more popular, with upcoming titles like "High Tide" starring Lizzy Greene and "Dangerous Animals" directed by Sean Byrne also in development.
