Sharknado gets 10th anniversary restoration release on DVD
Sharknado didn't just celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2023; it underwent a visual effects upgrade and received entirely new shots. Since its debut in the summer of 2013, Sharknado has been a cultural sensation, dominating online discussions and spawning five sequels, each progressively funnier and featuring more celebrity cameos. The 10th-anniversary DVD hit shelves on January 30, 2024.
The film's premise is straightforward: Los Angeles faces the wrath of Hurricane David, which unleashes a bizarre onslaught of sharks onto the city. Fin Shephard, played by Ian Ziering, leads a motley crew including barmaid Nova Clarke, friend Baz Hogan, and others in a mission to rescue his family amidst the chaos.
The restoration for the 10th anniversary involved redoing the entire film to accommodate the upgraded visual effects, including a memorable new shot featuring a shark landing on the Capitol Records spire. The result is a vastly improved viewing experience compared to its original release.
Director Anthony C. Ferrante revealed the tight timeline they faced during the film's production, completing it in just six months, including filming and post-production. Despite any criticisms, Sharknado remains a beloved gem, with Ian Ziering's involvement reflecting the absurdities of America's healthcare system. The film's enduring charm lies in its unabashed embrace of its B-movie roots. However, it's lamentable that the restored version wasn't released on Blu-ray, missing a chance to fully showcase its upgraded visuals.
