Pirates of the Caribbean actor killed in shark encounter
Tamayo Perry, an actor known for his role in "Pirates of the Caribbean," tragically died after a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii. Perry, 49, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by Honolulu's emergency services during a press conference.
Emergency services responded to a call at Malaekahana Beach around 1:00 PM local time. Despite being swiftly brought to shore by jet ski, Perry, who also served as a lifeguard, was pronounced dead by paramedics.
Perry played one of the buccaneers in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment of the franchise starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Geoffrey Rush. He also appeared in TV shows like "Lost," "Hawaii Five-0," and films such as "Blue Crush" and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Additionally, Perry featured in a Coca-Cola commercial.
A native of Oahu's east side, Perry had been a professional surfer for over a decade. On the Oahu Surfing Experience website, where he was an instructor, he described surfing "the world's deadliest wave" and expressed pride in his ability to compete with top surfers globally. He mentioned surviving a near-fatal accident caused by someone else's "lack of awareness," without providing further details.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager remembered Perry as "a lifeguard loved by all," noting his widespread renown on Oahu's north shore and beyond. Lager praised Perry's infectious personality and expressed condolences to his family. Mayor Rick Blangiardi echoed these sentiments, calling Perry's death "a tragic loss" and highlighting his legacy as a legendary waterman and respected member of the ocean safety team. He requested privacy for Perry's family during this difficult time.
