Man threatens to 'vaporize' people at JAWS shooting location
A Martha's Vineyard man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly threatening to detonate explosives and "vaporize" anyone who approached him at an island ferry terminal.
Tisbury police reported being called to the Steamship Authority around 9 p.m. in response to a report of an unloaded revolver. Upon arrival, officers encountered the caller, later identified as David Capato. According to police, Capato threw the gun into a blue mailbox near the terminal before returning to his car.
Capato reportedly became uncooperative, claiming he had multiple firearms and explosives in his vehicle. He further threatened to "vaporize" anyone who approached, stating he had a trigger mechanism. Police said his car was parked in the terminal's drop-off area.
Capato asserted that he had relevant experience and understood the gravity of his threats, police noted. Out of an abundance of caution, officers evacuated the terminal, parking lot, incoming ferry, and nearby areas. A Tactical Response Team and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were called to assist.
After a negotiator intervened, Capato exited his vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. Police noted that he was wearing a body-worn camera at the time of his arrest.
State police determined there were no explosives in the car, terminal, or a freight boat docked at the port. However, investigators discovered an M4 assault rifle inside Capato's vehicle, and the revolver was recovered from the mailbox.
Capato faces charges including terroristic threats, threats to commit a crime, disorderly conduct, improper storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and witness intimidation.
