JAWS star Richard Dreyfuss sends heartfelt message to fans as he cancels reunion appearance

Fans hoping to see one of Jaws’ most beloved stars reunite with fellow cast members next week have received disappointing news. Actor Richard Dreyfuss has announced that he will no longer attend the highly anticipated Jaws cast gathering scheduled for May 29–30 at The Hollywood Show in Burbank, California.

Dreyfuss, who portrayed oceanographer Matt Hooper in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster, shared the update with fans through social media, explaining that circumstances beyond his control have made it impossible for him to appear in person. While expressing regret over the cancellation, he emphasized his support for the castmates and fans who will still take part in the celebration.

The reunion had been billed as one of the largest gatherings of surviving Jaws cast members ever assembled, bringing together numerous actors and crew members connected to the film that transformed Hollywood and helped establish the modern summer blockbuster.

Although Dreyfuss did not provide a specific reason for stepping away from the event, organizers said the actor was deeply disappointed and wanted fans to know he appreciated their continued support.

The cancellation follows another health-related absence last year, when Dreyfuss was forced to withdraw from a shark-themed fan convention after being diagnosed with viral bronchitis. Doctors reportedly advised him against traveling at the time.

More than five decades after its release, Jaws remains one of cinema’s most influential films. The thriller not only became a cultural phenomenon but also redefined movie marketing and summer theatrical releases, cementing its place in film history.

While fans attending the reunion will undoubtedly miss Dreyfuss’s presence, the event will still celebrate the enduring legacy of Jaws and the cast and creators who helped bring Amity Island’s most famous shark story to life.

The Daily Jaws will continue to follow updates regarding future appearances and anniversary events connected to the iconic film.

To all the incredible fans, my JAWS cast family, and everyone involved in making this reunion possible — I want to share how deeply grateful I am for the love and excitement surrounding this special event.

It truly breaks my heart that I won’t be able to attend the reunion at The Hollywood Show May 29th & 30th. Please know this was never the outcome I hoped for. Due to circumstances completely beyond my control, it has become impossible for me to be there in person.
My heart is absolutely with my fellow cast members who will be attending. Sharing this journey with them has been one of the greatest blessings of my life, and I know they’ll make this celebration unforgettable. I hope everyone attending gives them the warmest welcome and all the love they deserve!

To the fans — thank you for carrying this story with you through the years. Your passion, kindness, and support have meant more than words can ever properly express. The connection we’ve shared through the years is something I will always treasure.

And to the creators, organizers, and caretakers of this legacy, thank you for continuing to honor what brought all of us together in the first place.

While I may not be there physically, I’ll certainly be there in spirit. I hope the weekend is filled with laughter, memories, celebration, and the kind of joy this fandom has always created so beautifully.

With love and gratitude always.
