Jaws play 'The Shark Is Broken' to make international debut later this year
Fintastic news for Jaws fans! Jaws inpsired play ‘The Shark Is Broken’ is back with a confirmed run in Canada later this year. The play, based on Jaws screenwriter Carl Gottlieb’s The Jaws Log and Jaws star Robert Shaw’s (Quint) diaries, is set to wow international audiences later this year.
Co-written by and starring Ian Shaw (son of Jaws actor Robert Shaw), The Shark Is Broken centres around the behind-the-scenes drama of Hollywood classic “Jaws,” with a comedic flair.
The play, performed on a full size Orca set with an award-nominated oceanic video backdrop, first made waves all the way back in 2019 with an intimate first performance in Brighton that The Daily Jaws was lucky enough to attend.
An acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival soon followed with the play scheduled to debut in London in 2020 but sadly the COVID-19 pandemic meant the show was postponed to 2021. However, like the delays caused by Bruce the mechanical shark on the orginal Jaws, the extra time allowed the actors to polish their performances as well as the writers to add an important new scene, making The Shark Is Broken a superb piece of theatre.
In October 2021, The Shark Is Broken began a four month run in the heart of London’s West End at the Ambassador’s Theatre. Winning rave-reviews and the love of new and seasoned Jaws fans, an international run was what we had hoped for.
The play’s director Guy Masterson said: “Thrilled that our wee Shark which devoured Edinburgh and digested London is now hungering up The St Lawrence Seaway to Toronto!” while actor Liam Murray-Scott (playing Richard Dreyfuss) added: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be taking our little show about a Great White Shark to the Great White North..."
Co-writer and The Shark Is Broken star Ian Shaw spoke with The Daily Jaws during the build up to last year’s smash-hit West End run.
The Shark Is Broken is due to perform at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Toronto from September to November 2022. Watch the trailer below for a taste of what’s in store!
