'JAWS Bridge' to host fourth annual Amity Shark Race

On August 25 at 11:30 am, the waters beneath Oak Bluff's Little Bridge will be teeming with the Island’s most renowned predator. A shiver of sharks will race through Sengekontacket Pond, pursuing something far more valuable than a meal.

These wooden “sharks” are competing for the prestigious Amity Shark Fin Trophy. The first shark fin to cross the finish line will earn its sponsor a place on the trophy for ultimate bragging rights, along with an original ceramic horseshoe crab created by acclaimed artist Mark Rea.

Every shark sponsorship helps Felix Neck continue its vital conservation and education efforts. With nothing to lose, may the fastest shark win!

What to Expect

  • Start Time: The race kicks off at 11:30 am, following the Friends of Sengekontacket’s Oar and Paddle Regatta.

  • Viewing Spot: Watch the race from the Little Bridge.

  • Supervision: The event is supervised by Mass Audubon's Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary staff and solely benefits the sanctuary and its programs.

  • Race Details: Once launched, the sharks are on their own, though the race committee may assist if they get stuck. The winner is the first numbered shark to cross the finish line, with each shark number randomly assigned to an entry.

  • Judging: Judges stationed at the finish line will make the final decision. Mass Audubon employees and members of the Felix Neck Amity Shark Race Committee are ineligible to win.

  • Winner Announcement: The winner will be announced on the Felix Neck Facebook page the day after the race and notified via telephone, email, or U.S. mail. The winner will be instructed on how to claim the Shark Fin Trophy and Horseshoe Crab, though the claim is the sole responsibility of the prize winner. The winner's name will also appear in Mass Audubon and local media.

  • Prizes: No cash equivalent will be offered in lieu of the designated prize.
