‘JAWS’ 50th anniversary re-release leaves newcomers in box-office wake

Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws returned to theaters for its 50th anniversary re-release and outperformed newcomer Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, at the Labor Day weekend box office, while Zach Cregger’s horror hit Weapons reclaimed the top spot after briefly yielding to a Netflix animated musical.

“Jaws,” back in 3,200 theaters to mark its 50th anniversary since debuting in June 1975, took second place at the box office with $8.1 million through Sunday and an estimated $9.8 million through Labor Day Monday. Spielberg’s classic trailed Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which reclaimed the top spot in its fourth weekend with $10.2 million over three days and about $12.4 million across the holiday frame.

In third place, Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing opened to $7.8 million over the weekend and $9.5 million through Monday, followed by Disney’s Freakier Friday at No. 4 with $6.5 million across three days and $8.3 million for the long weekend. Rounding out the top five, The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, earned $6.4 million through Sunday and $8 million by Monday.
