British man injured after Tobago shark encounter
A British gentleman has sustained severe injuries following a shark attack off the shores of the Caribbean island of Tobago. The 64-year-old victim is currently in critical condition in the hospital, having had his left hand to elbow and left thigh severed, along with a laceration to his stomach, as reported by a local official.
The attack occurred approximately 10 meters from the shoreline in Courland Bay at 09:15 local time on Friday. The Foreign Office has confirmed its assistance to the victim's family during this ordeal.
The incident involved a bull shark, and the victim is undergoing critical care at Scarborough General Hospital, according to a statement released on the Facebook page of Farley C. Augustine, chief secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly.
Eyewitness Orion Jakerov, water sports manager at the nearby Starfish Hotel, recounted that others in the water attempted to physically fend off the shark. He mentioned to local broadcaster TTT Live that those in the water were at waist height and likely unaware of the approaching shark, as they were not in deep water.
As a precautionary measure, authorities closed seven beaches and the nearby Buccoo Reef Marine Park tourist attraction after the incident, according to local reports. Mr. Augustine confirmed the unfortunate event and stated that discussions have taken place with the British High Commissioner.
