Are you a Jaws Mastermind?

Comedian and actor, Tim Vine, was certainly hoping he was when he stepped into the famous black leather chair of the BBC quiz show, Mastermind, shown over the Christmas period.

His specialist chosen subject was the 1975 Steven Spielberg blockbuster, Jaws. In 90 seconds he answered the following Jaws related questions.

Left to right contestants, Comedian Tim Vine, newsreader Alastair Stewart, Comedian Hal Cruttenden and journalist Samira Ahmed

Question one: What species of shark is killing people in the waters around Amity Island?

Question two: The mayor of Amity Island suggests to the Police Chief Brody, played by Roy Scheider, that the shark's first victim could have been killed by the propeller of a boat. What's the name of the first victim?

Question three: Brody wants to close beaches after the first attack, but a group of children are doing a mile swim in April Bay for their merit badges at the time. They are members of which youth organisation?

Question four: The death of the second victim, Alex Kintner, leads to a call to catch the shark. How much does Mrs Kintner offer as a reward, although Quint tells a town meeting he'll catch and kill him for ten?

Question five: Hooper and Brody cut open a tiger shark that's been captured by the locals, to establish whether it is the shark they are looking for. Inside its stomach they find a car registration plate from which American state?

Question six: The film uses underwater footage of a real shark attacking the shark cage, what was the surname of the Australian couple hired to shoot this footage?

Question seven: Mayor Vaughn eventually signs the authorisation for Brody to hire Quint to catch the shark. Quint gets the money he wants and asks for lunch, as well as a case of brandy. What flavour brandy?

Question eight: Just before Brody gets on the boat to hunt the shark, his wife asks him what she should tell the kids. He replies she should tell them he is?

Question nine: In the screenwriter Carl Gottlieb's memoir of the film, after the end of a day's shooting, Murray Hamilton, who plays Mayor Larry Vaughn, petted a small dog he saw in the street, only to find out - to his cost - that it was not actually a dog. What other animal?

Question ten: In the film's closing scene, as Hooper and Brody use the flotation barrels to swim back to shore, Brody says "I used to hate the water." What's Hooper's reply?

Answers:
1. Great White Shark
2. Chrissie
3. The boy scouts
4. $3,000
5. Louisiana
6. Taylor
7. Apricot - this was Tim's only incorrect answer, he said peach.
8. Going fishing
9. A skunk
10. I can't imagine why?

Other contestants had such diverse specialist subjects such as Lewis Hamilton (we know Rob from The Bearded Trio did well on this one), Magnus Magnusson and Space:1999.

At the half way point, Tim is in joint first place, along with two of his fellow contestants, all on 9 points. It's then a two-minute general knowledge round, where Tim ended up in fourth place with a total of 16 points. I guess you could say he needed some T. Vine inspiration!
