Watch Quint's full JAWS death scene recreated in first person
If you’re a JAWS fan like me, you love these movies for the characters, shark and of course shark attack / encounter scenes. The shark attack / encounter scenes (especially in Spielberg’s original JAWS) are designed to inspire our terror and fear while gradually revealing the shark. When Chrissie (she was the first) Watkins is killed, we don’t see any of rhe shark. And when Quint is killed, we not only see the shark but we watch as Quint is devoured before being dragged underwater.
The editing of Quint’s death scene is brilliant in it’s use of different points of view. We see it from Brody’s and Quint’s perspecttive as well as ‘ours’. Verna Fields won an Oscar for Best Editing for JAWS at the 1976 Academy Awards.
However, none of the shark attack / encounter scenes in the JAWS movies are shown (in their entirety) from the victim’s perspective. The closest we’ve come are Fitzroyce’s death in JAWS 3-D and the spilt second shots of Quint sliding down the Orca towards the shark’s mouth. What must have Quint’s final moments been like for him? Well, YouTubers Digital Diamonds have virtually recreated Quint’s death using popular Minecraft. Minecraft is the best-selling video game in history, with over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players as of 2021.
The recreation starts with Quint seeing the shark rise up out of the water and crashing on to the weakened transom of the Orca which starts to sink. As Quint, we scramble to get away from the shark before Hooper’s unused air tank rolls down, crushing our hand, forcing us to let go and slide down towards the shark’s jaws.
After a few futile attempts to kick away the giant shark, we are soon in the inescapable trap of the shark’s mouth and we are shakin, tenderized and then everything fades to black as we pass. This recreation is matched exactly to the movie’s audio track, making Quint’s (Robert Shaw) screams even more haunting as we experience his death through his eyes. Watch the full recreation below.
