Steven Spielberg offers new theory on fate of JAWS dog

Hello, Islanders!

A couple of months ago I wrote a piece in which I hypothesized about the possible fate of Pipit the dog.  I suggested several scenarios, including one where he went home happy after his day on the beach.

Recently, the FILM website published a similar piece, commenting on a conversation a junior reporter for the New York Daily News had with JAWS director Steven Spielberg. During the chat the reporter told the director that each time she watches the film she cries when Pipit disappears.

Seeing that the reporter was genuinely affected by this portion of the film, he offered the following:

"What's possible is Pipit was not owned by the person who threw the stick. Pipit was a neighbor's dog and Pipit decided he was tired of chasing the stick for as many times as it was thrown to him. He was hungry and ignored the stick in the water, swam home and had a very good dinner."

This new plot variation pleased the reporter, as I’m sure it does the countless number of dog lovers who react the same way when they watch JAWS.  I wonder what Spielberg would have said if he’d been asked about Ben Gardner’s mate?  😊
