Shark movies coming in 2022

You can’t keep a good, or indeed bad, shark movie down.

This year it looks as if several more shark fins will be slicing through the water chasing the chum lines left by the likes of Jaws, Deep Blue Sea and The Meg.

Covid put pay to some films being completed, but here’s hoping that the following shark films reach the surface, whether that be on the big screen or released on demand.

One thing is abundantly clear, there is still a huge demand for shark films on our screens, which is just as well, as this lot are coming in hot.

Please note that the following film titles and release dates are subject to change.

We’ll be adding more shark films to the list once they get announced. What are you most looking forward to from the below?

The Requin

Date expected to surface: Out now in the US/ Feb 8 in the UK

The first film to swim its tail fin into the shark film arena is The Requin (also known as From Below in the UK).

The film finds a couple, played by Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, Batman and Robin) and James Tupper (Big Little Lies), stranded at sea off the coast of Vietnam.

A tropical storm has washed away their holiday villa, but they aren't the only ones in the water. Can the couple survive the elements and a Great White shark tracking their every move?

Reviews haven’t exactly been kind to this 89 minute film, and more than quite a few have been left unimpressed by the poor CGI sharks and the fact that the audience don’t get sight of a dorsal fin until an hour into the film.

Perhaps some of the below may fair better with shark film fans?

Beneath the Surface

Date expected to surface: March

Beneath the Surface is a 2022 British horror thriller film about a young woman attempting to deal with the aftermath of a shark attack.

Produced and directed by Scott Jeffrey (Spider in the Attic; The Mutation; Bats; Bad Nun: Deadly Vows; Cupid; ClownDoll) and Rebecca Matthews (Witches of Amityville Academy; The Candy Witch; Pet Graveyard) from a screenplay written by Paul W. Franklin.

After surviving a shark attack in which her dad and sister died, Lexy’s life becomes a living nightmare. With the help of a counsellor, she gradually uncovers the truth of exactly what happened that night.

The Bad Guys

Date expected to surface: April 1 UK/ April 22 US

This animated caper from Dreamworks sees several reformed yet misunderstood criminal animals - including a shark, a wolf, a tarantula and snake - attempt to become good, with some disastrous results along the way.

The Bad Guys is based on the New York Times best-selling book series by Aaron Blabey.

Deep Fear

Date expected to surface: TBC

Set in the Caribbean, Deep Fear is described as an intense and visceral survival thriller with furious action throughout that promises a mix of storms, drug traffickers and tiger sharks. Actions speak louder than words, so let’s see if this lives up to the self-propelled hype.

Madalina Gheneait plays Naomi, a round-the-world yachtswoman, who responds to a distress signal to aid a sinking boat, where she finds three survivors. Turns out they drug traffickers who force Naomi to dive into the sunken wreck to find their cocaine, and now she is trapped between the tiger sharks attracted by the dead crew and the drug runners.

Sounds like Dead Calm meets The Shallows by way of The Deep.

The Reef 2: Stalked

Date expected to surface: TBC

The Reef (2010) is one of the best shark films since Jaws, so on paper this sequel is an exciting prospect. It is made even more exciting as the original film’s director - Andrew Traucki – is back at the helm and is also on script duties.

This is one of those films that was on last year’s list, but with it now having swum into post production it should be bursting onto screens at some point this year.

After seeing her sister be murdered in front of her, Nic, her sister Annie and two friends travel to a remote Pacific island for kayaking and diving…but all they get is danger, after being attacked by a huge great white shark.

To survive, they must work together, and Nic must face her fears and slay the shark.

Blood in the Water

Date expected to surface: TBC

This shark-infused thriller, from director Dominic Ellis, sounds like Jaws meets Saw. Do you want to play a I’m not talking about some game fish?

A young woman, guilt ridden for a crime she committed but got free of, is captured by a sadist for a unique game of Russian roulette alongside four similar people, who also escaped the law. But they’ll need more than luck and cunning to escape the jaws of a great white shark.

Below

Date expected to surface: TBC

As several of the shark attacks from Jersey Shore in 1916 have shown us, sharks don’t just attack in the sea.

Below follows a group of teens who are fighting for survival when a hungry bull shark decides they are next on the menu in a remote reservoir. The film, directed by Robin Christian, is currently in post production.

Shark films filming in 2022

The following shark features are currently going before the camera, but we aren’t likely to see them until 2023.

The Black Demon

Josh Lucas – who once starred alongside Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss in Poseidon - discovers that the legend of the monster Megalodon shark is anything but a legend. The film is being helmed by Adrian Grunberg, who also directed Rambo: Last Blood.

The Meg 2

It is looking like 2023 may well be the year of the Megalodon. This sequel to the giant fish hit of 2018, based yet again on the books by Steve Alten, has already begun shooting on soundstages in London.

Returning yet again to lead the fight is Jason Statham, sat in the director’s chair this time round is Ben Wheatley.
