Sequel to 2010's Shark Thriller 'The Reef' Is Happening

The Reef (2010) is widely regarding as one of the best shark thrillers, after Jaws. The original Australian-set film is actually based on a terrifying true story that happened in the early 1980s off the coast of Townsville in far northern Queensland.

Well now, a whole decade on from when it got us lifting our feet off the floor, it is getting a belated sequel, and the great news is it is being helmed and written by the director and writer of the original, Andrew Traucki.

He's been busy scaring us of late with killer crocodile feature, Black Water: Abyss, a sequel to his own Black Water (2007) so is well versed in watery scares.

Whether or not this follow up to The Reef is also based on a true story is not yet clear, but the hope is that this will be as thrilling as the first. So what can we expect from the sequel?

Well, seeing as (spoiler alert) much of the cast of the original didn't make the end credits it will be like 47 Meters Down and its follow up, sequels in name only.

This time, we have n an effort to heal after witnessing her sister’s horrific murder, Nic, her sister Annie and two close friends travel to a remote Pacific island for a kayaking and diving adventure. Nic's trying to get away from it all after seeing her sister get murdered - one suspects this will be something of a bus man's holiday in that respect.

Just a few hours into their get away from it all trip, it turns out the women are being stalked and then attacked by a massive Great White Shark. To survive they must work together, and Nic will have to overcome her post-traumatic stress and face her fears. But can she beat the shark?

It's another strong female lead shark feature, just as the 47 Meters Down films and The Shallows were before it. The Reef 2 is set to reach us in 2021.
