Richard Dreyfuss puts record straight on the mispronunciation of shark name in JAWS
Matt Hooper may not have returned to our screens for JAWS 2 (that phone call to Ellen Brody doesn’t count) but Richard Dreyfuss returns to The Daily Jaws in the sequel to the first part of his exclusive interview with the world’s number one JAWS fan site.
His deep dive into all things JAWS reveals how those proportions aren’t correct when it comes to where most people think he had to read the scientific name of the great white shark – Carcharodon Carcharias – off a cue. Most think it is in the Amity Island defaced billboard scene, with Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) and Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) but it is actually a scene earlier in the film.
He also discusses how he influenced the tiger shark autopsy scene and why it was so important to the film, why it was the right call to jettison the Hooper and Ellen Brody affair from the book and the Hooper scene he is proudest of in the entire film.
There’s also more fond memories of Dreyfuss and Quint actor Robert Shaw, including their planned pairings on stage in Hamlet and King Lear, both which sadly never came to pass.
And, Dreyfuss also gets to talk about his passion for and the importance of teaching civics, and just how some of that might lead all the way back to JAWS.
