Greg Nicotero: JAWS 50th anniversary interview

Listen to Greg’s interview on Spotify and Apple Podcasts

To celebrate 50 years of Jaws, The Daily Jaws Podcast welcomes legendary filmmaker, producer, and effects artist Greg Nicotero — a titan in the world of horror and television. Greg is the co-founder of KNB EFX Group, the award-winning effects house behind som of the most iconic practical makeup in film and television. He’s served as director, executive producer, and makeup effects designer on AMC’s The Walking Dead and Creepshow, and his credits include Pulp Fiction, The Mist, Evil Dead II, Inglourious Basterds, Sin City, Kill Bill, and From Dusk Till Dawn. But long before all of that, he was a 12-year-old kid watching Jaws for the very first time — and everything changed.

In this special anniversary episode, Greg sits down with The Daily Jaws founder Ross Williams to unpack his lifelong obsession with Spielberg’s 1975 classic. From reading the novelisation before release to collecting memorabilia and eventually restoring one of the last remaining Jaws sharks for the Academy Museum, Greg has lived and breathed Jaws from the beginning.

He shares powerful reflections on the film’s unmatched practical effects, how its production struggles inspired genius, and why Jaws, Alien, and The Thing stand apart from today’s CGI-heavy fare. The conversation also explores his work on the upcoming Jaws at 50 documentary, produced alongside filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau, and the legacy of Jaws as a cinematic and cultural milestone.

And just when he thinks it’s safe to sit down for a podcast, a surprise guest crashes the interview to lay down the law.

This episode is a celebration of practical effects, film history, and the enduring impact of a shark movie that changed everything.
