Director of 'Deep Blue Sea' to helm new shark movie
For many, Deep Blue Sea (1999) is their favourite shark film outside of JAWS (1975), so it is fin-tastic news – as reported by Variety – that the director of that shark film is set to dip his toe back into water containing sharks.
If we can’t have Steven Spielberg returning to JAWS, then we’ll certainly more than welcome Renny Harlin back to shark cinema, especially as Deep Blue Sea had some great action, practical sharks and so many loving nods to JAWS.
The director, also known for his work on Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight, is set to give us a second helping of shark action and suspense.
He also helmed A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4: The Dream Master, which even featured a Freddy Krueger JAWS- inspired homage, so we can’t wait for this Finn to deliver some fin action and give us something special.
And that something special is Deep Water, which is set to enter production later this year. It sees a group of passengers on a plane which has to land in shark-infested waters, and sees the survivors have to help each other and work together to escape the sinking wreck and evade those pesky sharks.
Harlin said: “I’ve had my greatest success when working with planes or sharks. Getting to combine those two of my favourite thriller elements in a character-driven action adventure is a dream come true. I can’t wait to take the audience on the scariest plane ride of their lives.”
The film will be produced Simmonds/Hamilton Prods, fronted by KISS star Gene Simmons and Gary Hamilton, of Arclight Films. Simmonds and KISS are no stranger to sharks having once played a concert to great white sharks in Australia.
