What If? Stories Jaws Giveaway

Earlier this month we told you about Matt Stapleton and his jawsome What If? Stories kickstarter campaign and the response from The Daily Jaws community was amazing! So much so that Matt had the idea to give a little something back as a thank you in the form of a giveaway. We caught up with Matt to learn more about the project.

Matt: What If Stories are short stories set in the worlds of my favourite films.

I have been a Jaws fan all my life. I remember we had Jaws 1-3 taped off the TV and I would watch them over and over as a kid. When I heard there was going to be a fourth, I was beyond excited. I had the Jaws Revenge poster in my wall that I cut out of the free magazine you could get in the video store. It’s obvious now that Jaws Revenge has become a benchmark for bad movies and as I grew older, I realised number 3 was not too good either. It occurred to me that every time they left Amity it went wrong for the films- even the best scene in Jaws Revenge is as the movie begins, in Amity!

I keep hearing about reboots and what could happen in the Jaws franchise and for me it has always been about the town. Amity has a shark problem but sharks are not its only problem. I always felt there was something being covered up. This is where my ideas started to formulate, playing in those murky waters and wondering “what if the Mayor/town/council were covering things up?” My story envisaged Deputy Hendricks having found out some of the goings on in Amity waters. He blows the whistle and promptly leaves town in search of a fresh start and that fresh start is in Perfection, where the movie Tremors is set. He soon finds himself in trouble again and learns that no town is perfect.

We are working on the Perfection story now and running a Kickstarter to help with the costs. These Jaws inspired stories feature in issues of What If? Stories, our anthology comic book series. However, we are going to do a limited print run for a book including Amity & Perfection in one limited edition issue and this is available on our Kickstarter right now. The campaigns we run help cover some of the artists’ costs and any support is always hugely appreciated- by getting behind this project you help us tell more stories in the future.

Getting my Amity story out of my head and onto the page was a huge moment, but I realise now it was just a start and I have so much more to say. I have a lot more stories to tell with Deputy Hendricks crossing over into various movie worlds maybe Gremlins at some stage but not before a return to Amity. I’ll bring you more on that in the future. These stories are a labour of love for me. They are a way of telling a story we may never get to see otherwise. I love sharing them and I hope people will enjoy them as much as I do. So please check it out, get behind us and help us continue to make cool comic books!
