Star Jaws: May The Fan Art Be With You. Always.

When it comes pop-culture parodies and mashups, Jaws is up there with the best of them. The one time highest grossing movie ever, watched by more people than had ever seen a single movie before, it was bound to find its way into the national, if not global consciousness. Then just 2 years later in 1977, Star Wars blasted into theatres, picking up where Jaws had left off, taking public cinematic hysteria and not to mention merchandising opportunities, to new heights.

When artists realised the popularity and opportunity to blend and redefine pop-culture phenomenons like classic movies, Jaws and Star Wars were obvious choices and some of the mashup fan art that continues to be created has to be seen to be believed.

Below, we have gathered together some of our favourite ‘Star Jaws’ fan art. Enjoy!

The history of mashup culture in general can be dated back to the beginnings of dada and conceptual art. Artists such as Marcel Duchamp were the first to introduce already existing objects, which they rearranged and combined in collages, to the world of higher art. These artists believed that even though certain artefacts were ascribed a certain meaning, this meaning could be altered through rearranging them and putting them into a new context.
