Jaws London Screening In Glorious 35mm

Jaws megafan and Film Journalist D.J. Devereux talked to the young 17 year old Joe Cornick whom curated the Jaws evening and is responsible for running and restoring the Slindon Cinema, adding a 35mm Towers Cinema Projection system within Slindon Cinema. Thus "keeping the art of film projection alive in the 21st century" as Slindon Cinemas mission statement declares.

Devereux sat down in the nostalgic projection room with Joe to discuss and ultimately nerd out about Jaws, whilst the haggard yet beautiful 35mm reels of Jaws projected through our conversation.

TDJ: So why did you pick Jaws? Asked Devereux.

"Jaws is an undisputed classic of cinema, and undoubtedly one of the defining films of Steven Spielberg’s career. In starting Slindon cinema I knew Jaws was on the list for top films I’d dream of getting a 35mm print of. Since opening our doors in May 2019 we have successfully screened a 35mm film almost every month. We specialise in creating a retro experience and mainly a lot of classic 50’s and 60’s films, which is why I was slightly apprehensive if Jaws would not go down well with our more “older” audiences of West Sussex? But never the less it proved to sell out seating over 80 people per night."

TDJ: What's your first memory or what comes to mind when you hear someone mention Jaws?

" I think my first memory of jaws has to be seeing the scene with the head coming out from the boat, and of course the defining memory for everyone is John Williams genius score which I believe Spielberg actually thought was a joke when he first previewed it?"

TDJ: Ultimately, What does jaws mean to you?

"Jaws will always be one of my top films, due to its popularity between current audiences and folks who saw it screened back in 75’. I’m glad I’ve been able to screen this classic once again on the silver screen, bringing an audience together to share the thrills and experiences that people shared back when the film was first released!"

As Devereux & Cornick toasted to his successful night, we drank to each others legs.

Slindon Cinema can be found online via their website as well as their official Facebook page.
