THEY’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER VOTE: HOW YOU CAN HELP THE SHARK IS BROKEN CRUSH THEATRE AWARDS LIKE QUINT
The Shark Is Broken, the play about the behind the scenes antics about the making of Jaws, is up for two theatre awards but is gonna need a bigger vote if it is to win.
Which is where Jaws fans come in, as you can help vote in its two categories of best actor in a new play and video design at the 2021 BroadwayWorld UK Awards. Other shows nominated include the likes of Frozen and Back To The Future.
You get goosebumps from the very first moment that Ian Shaw, looking and sounding exactly like his dad, first appears on the stage. The Shark Is Broken is full of moments like that, which make you hairs stand on end, be it the set of the cutaway Orca or the spot-on performances of Demetri Goritsas as Roy Scheider and Liam Murray Scott as Richard Dreyfuss.
Anyone who has seen The Shark Is Broken will have been wowed by the set of the Orca and its video background, which sucks you into it as if you are on the ocean with the crew.
That amazing backdrop by Nina Dunn (Dunn, Dunn, Dunn, Dunn) is now up for Best video design of a new production of a play or musical. Currently it is in second place in the voting rankings.
Ian Shaw's sublime performance as Robert Shaw is also up for an award in the category of Best leading performer in a new production of a play.
Samantha McCrae flew down from Scotland to see The Shark Is Broken. It was a flight that was well worth making.
She said: "As a lifelong fan of Jaws, seeing Robert Shaw’s son Ian filling his father's shoes in this role was truly moving. The light hearted and comedic aspects of the play was beautifully contrasted with the very real passion for the art of acting that the cast showed by allowing us to see behind the camera for one of the most iconic aspects of the movie.
"Ian's performance during the much loved Indianapolis monologue was not only truly moving as a standalone monologue but a powerful homage to his father."
Ian is up against the likes of James McAvoy, Ralph Fiennes and David Harewood, and every public vote counts. You can vote for Ian’s performance as Robert Shaw by clicking on the below link.
Voting closes on March 29th, the same night as Oscar night and the same date that the Oscars were held in 1976, the year Jaws was nominated for four awards. To vote for Ian and Nina, click on ‘cast your vote now’ t be taken to the award nominees.
Dean Newman, head of content for The Daily Jaws, said: “Robert Shaw wasn't nominated for one of them, but Ian Shaw is now nominated in these awards for playing his dad. So, wouldn’t it be great if Jaws fans could help Ian get some much-deserved recognition for playing his dad, playing Quint.
“It’s a role that should have gained more plaudits and nominations after the release of Jaws in 1975, but now we can help right that wrong and help shine a light on both father and son.”
