Shark film Blood In The Water is billed as Saw meets Jaws
Could a new swimming pool shark horror that is billed as Saw meets Jaws reach new depths of horror for shark cinema?
That's what Blood In The Water is hoping to do when it is released in the US on June 14, which leaves it swimming perilously close to the US anniversary release date of Jaws back in 1975.
No shark film can ever escape the bite radius comparison to the Steven Spielberg shark classic, so swimming in similar release date waters will only invite more of it. Well, they do say there is no such thing as bad publicity....right?
As with other shark films, the poster design directly draws comparison to the Roger Kastel Jaws poster, with a shark rising towards its victims, although this time instead of the action taking place at sea it is within a swimming pool.
Many watching Jaws growing up will have had the childhood fear of sharks in a swimming this makes it a reality and throws us in at the deep end.
A woman is abducted and awakes to find herself chained to a swimming pool, along with five strangers.
One by one, they are pitted against the great white shark and are dragged into the pool on their chains by their unseen kidnapper who has them as live bait.
Their goal, to survive in the water for three minutes against the great white. It’s safe to say there will be no heavy petting in this pool, but will be plenty of splashing and running.
Blood In The Water is certainly an intriguing premise, something which shark films have been short of recently, and the Saw movies were really popular. Hopefully this film will have some of its inventiveness as well.
For shark film fans though, it will all come down to how good the shark looks and how good the kills are. If they aren't then Blood In The Water could easily up dead in the water and a sore – rather than Saw - loser in the Jaws also rans of sharksploitation cinema.
Blood In The Water - which shouldn't be confused with Capsized: Blood In The Water (2019) - is directed by Dominic Nutter (who helmed Jurassic Island) and stars Hannah Ponting, Jamie Robertson and Andrew Rolfe.
It is released on DVD in the US on June 14 and is available for pre-order from Amazon here.
