JAWS The Revenge doc gets new title and Kevin Smith as Executive Producer
2025 marks the 50th anniversary of one of cinema’s greatest blockbusters — Steven Spielberg’s legendary shark thriller Jaws. And just two years later, in 2027, the Jaws franchise will hit another milestone: the 40th anniversary of its notorious final chapter, Jaws: The Revenge — a film often cited as one of Hollywood’s most infamously bad sequels.
As divisive (and unintentionally entertaining) as Jaws: The Revenge may be, it’s not without its fans. One of them is Mike Gencarelli, owner of Voight-Kampff Productions, who recently announced plans to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary with a new documentary. Originally titled Jaws Goes to the Bahamas, the project has now been renamed The Shark That Roared, and a new poster confirms that filmmaker Kevin Smith has joined the production as an executive producer.
Directed by Joseph Sargent from a screenplay by Michael de Guzman, Jaws: The Revenge follows widow Ellen Brody, whose family has long been haunted by shark attacks. After her son is killed by a massive Great White, Ellen travels to the Bahamas to visit her other son, Michael. There, she meets pilot Hoagie Newcombe and begins a romance—only to discover that yet another Great White has followed her to paradise. The cast includes Lorraine Gary, Lance Guest, Mario Van Peebles, Karen Young, Judith Barsi, Michael Caine, Lynn Whitfield, Mitchell Anderson, Cedric Scott, Charles Bowleg, and Melvin Van Peebles.
Production on The Shark That Roared is now underway, with Gencarelli aiming to interview as many surviving cast and crew members as possible. Kevin Smith, a lifelong Jaws superfan, was interviewed for the documentary—and by the end of the session, had signed on as an executive producer. Anthony C. Ferrante, the Fangoria writer and director best known for helming all six Sharknado films, has also joined the project in the same role. A teaser trailer already features an interview with actor Lance Guest.
