Steven Spielberg wants to return to scary movies like JAWS
JAWS may almost be 50 years old but it still makes us jump and still has the power to scare, so it is great to hear Steven Spielberg is keen to get back to scaring us all over again.
He said: "I want to keep learning and discovering and scaring the shit out of myself and sometimes the shit out of you.
“I gotta get back to some of those earlier scary movies but that’s another story for later on."
Spielberg made the comments after receiving the Honorary Golden Bear for Life Achievement from U2's Bono at the Berlin Film Festival.
That doesn't mean he'll be making another JAWS film - not that we would say no to a JAWS prequel with Ian Shaw as Quint on the USS Indianapolis - but it sounds like he's certainly got at least one more Ben Gardner's head or velociraptor kitchen scene up his directorial sleeves.
Spielberg has made a huge impact on cinema, with his early films Duel (1971) and JAWS (1975) scaring whole generations of moviegoers with their deadly trucks and killer sharks.
He's continued to thrill us to the edge of our seats and make us jump with rampaging dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993) and invading aliens in War of the Worlds (2005).
Spielberg added: “I’ve been directing a long time, six decades, but it feels to me like I directed Duel and JAWS last year.
“At 76, I know a lot more about moviemaking than I did when I was 25 and directed my first feature. But the anxieties, the uncertainties and the fears that tormented me as I began shooting Duel have stayed vivid for 50 years as if no time has passed.”
In recent years we've seen the director focus on a wide range of films, from the drama of The Fabelmans and the musicality of West Side Story, and historical focused dramas such as The Post and War Horse. We've also had the likes of Ready Player One and The BFG, but not had a seat of the pants thrill ride since War of the Worlds in 2005.
In response to him receiving his lifetime achievement award, Spielberg added: “I feel a little alarmed to be told I’ve lived a lifetime because I’m not finished, I want to keep working. As long as there’s joy in it for me and as long as my audience can find joy and other human values in my films, I’m reluctant to ever say that’s a wrap.”
