HOW THE SHARK IS BROKEN CREATED THE ORCA CREAKING NOISES IS REVEALED

With the hugely impressive Orca set and lightning the other thing that really sells it that you are onboard a boat and at sea is the sound effects, and now it has been revealed just how that soundscape was achieved by the show’s director, Guy Masterson.

The director, who has been with the show from Brighton to Edinburgh and then the West End, made the announcement on Twitter ahead of the very final show.

They probably sent some foley artist down to a harbour to get actual sounds of a creaking boat, right? Wrong, turns out it was nothing more simple – or effective – than Guy Masterson’s foot creaking what looked like a wooden coffee table.

In the short 40 second clip on Twitter, Guy had his bare foot out and gave a demonstration. He said: “If anybody would like to know how the boat creaks were done in The Shark Is Broken, here it is.”

He then demonstrates and adds: “Yes, it was Masterson’s foot.”

Good to see that the show has been keeping him on his erm toes, and that he put his sole into getting just the right creak. Whether his foot had an understudy was sadly not revealed. Hopefully he has said foot insured for a princely sum.
