You're gonna see a bigger screen as Jaws is coming to IMAX and 3D!

That's a twenty-footer. Twenty-five. So corrects Quint (Robert Shaw) to Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) in Steven Spielberg's shark classic, Jaws.

They could almost be talking about the size of a cinema screen, rather than the length of the great white, as it has been announced that film is swimming onto IMAX for the very first time.

That means you're gonna see the great white, Brody (Roy Scheider), Hooper, Quint and his boat, the Orca, on the biggest screen it has ever appeared on.

And if that wasn't jaws dropping enough, we will also be getting Jaws in 3D, as it will be released in RealD 3D.

Dean Newman, head of content at The Daily Jaws, said: "Spielberg previously released a 3D version of his original dinosaur classic, Jurassic Park (1993), which was pretty impressive with it being done retrospectively.

"So, Jaws is a natural fit for the same conversion treatment. Even after almost 50 years since its release Jaws just keeps continuing to surprise, and if these releases help introduce new people to the film, then it can only be a good thing.

"Does Jaws need to be released in 3D? Of course not, and some may see the format as a gimmick, but who isn't curious to see Pipit, Alex Kintner and Bruce pop off the screen and suck us back to 1975 and Martha's Vineyard? It's no different than seeing it with a live orchestra. It is just a new way to enjoy the greatest film ever made."

Insert Fry from Futurama 'take my money' meme here.

Jaws won't be the first film in the series released in the format, that was Jaws 3D (1983), which was directed by Joe Alves, the production designer of the original film, so it would be interesting to get his take on seeing Bruce the shark and friends in the third dimension.

According to Deadline, Jaws will be released on IMAX and in RealD 3D beginning September 2 in the US. Spielberg's E.T. - the extra-terrestrial is also getting the same treatment.

Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Universal Pictures. “No filmmaker, it’s fair to say, has had a greater or more enduring impact on American cinema or has created more indelible cinematic memories for tens of billions of people worldwide. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of E.T. and the first Universal-Spielberg summer blockbuster, Jaws, than to allow audiences to experience these films in a way they’ve never been able to before.”

No word yet if the film will be released in IMAX and 3D in other territories.
