Sea turtle’s daring escape from jaws of tiger shark

A sea turtle has dodged the jaws of a tiger shark in Western Australia, and it’s exhausting, edge of the seat evasive manoeuvres has all been captured on film.

It’s like a higher stakes version of the tortoise and the hare, but despite its hunting prowess and those razor-sharp teeth, the tiger shark just can’t latch onto the gutsy sea turtle that is weaving and swimming for its life. All that is missing is a voiceover by Sir David Attenborough.

It is a scene filled with as much tension as anything that appears in the Jaws series, perhaps most closely evoking the pier incident scene from the original Steven Spielberg classic from 1975, when one local fisherman, Charlie, who has been pulled into the water just manages to escape the clutches of a great white shark.

It’s certainly hard not to shout “swim, turtle, swim!” as it uses turtle power to twist and turn away from the tiger shark, putting on a display of evasive manoeuvres that even Tom Cruise would be proud of in Top Gun: Maverick.

Thankfully. This sea turtle did make it out of the danger zone and safely to shore.

Can we go home now?
