JAWS composer John Williams rescinds retirement at age 91

JAWS composer John Williams has retracted his earlier statements about retiring, expressing his disinterest in making definitive pronouncements. The 91-year-old maestro, known for iconic scores like Jaws and Star Wars, clarified, "I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context, then I withdraw it."

In an interview with The Times newspaper, Williams explained that he remains open to scoring films if a project aligns with his interests and schedule. He emphasized his preference for an open-minded approach, stating, "Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind."

Despite a potential shift towards composing his own material, Williams' schedule for 2024 is already filled, featuring performances such as conducting his Second Violin Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in January and engagements in Vienna. He has also secured a conducting booking in Berlin for 2025.

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Williams acknowledged the evolving relationship between the commercial and classical music worlds. Recalling the past, he noted a sense of condescension when presenting film music to major orchestras. However, he anticipates a more collaborative future, stating, "I’d love to come back in 50 years’ time and see what cinema is contributing to the development of new music because I think young composers will want to work across both."

When asked about a unifying theme in his extensive repertoire, encompassing scores for films like Schindler’s List and Harry Potter, Williams acknowledged the need to adapt his style to each project. He mused, "Film requires you to adapt your style to every project that comes along," highlighting the diversity in his compositions. As for any personal imprint, he humbly defers, leaving it to others to identify.
